Woman and teen injured in commercial vehicle accident on Highway 54, Pike County, Missouri

The crash occurred on Highway 54 when an Isuzu box truck rear-ended an SUV that had slowed for traffic

A 53-year-old woman and a 14-year-old girl, both of Ashland, were seriously injured in a commercial vehicle crash on Highway 54 near Route UU in Pike County, Missouri, on Thursday, April 23, according to the State Highway Patrol.‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍

The eastbound collision involved three vehicles and began when a semi-truck slowed down for ducks in the road. A 2024 Nissan Rogue reduced its speed in response but was struck from behind by a 2021 Isuzu NPR box truck.

All passengers were wearing seatbelts at the time of the impact.

Paramedics airlifted the woman and the teen to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis for treatment of serious injuries. The 53-year-old Illinois man driving the Isuzu suffered moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph Hospital.

The 35-year-old driver of the semi-truck was not hurt. Troopers continue to investigate the sequence of events.

Why did the Isuzu truck fail to stop on Highway 54?

Commercial vehicle collisions often require extensive reconstruction to determine why a driver failed to maintain a safe following distance. Investigators will likely examine the Isuzu driver's hours of service, electronic logging device data, and vehicle maintenance records to understand the moments leading up to the impact.

National Legal Analyst Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal"[ANCHOR — USE AS PRIMARY QUOTE] In addition to the diligent work of law enforcement, an attorney can re-interview important witnesses, analyze any surveillance video from a crash scene, and obtain phone and texting records of the liable party. Time is of the essence in cases such as this one, and the victim’s family must ensure that evidence is reviewed efficiently."

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, trucks are involved in 28% of crashes on major state corridors, with rear-end impacts being a frequent pattern when traffic suddenly slows.

What are the legal options for the injured passengers?

When passengers are severely injured in a rear-end collision, they are typically free of any comparative fault. The recovery process often involves navigating complex commercial insurance policies held by the at-fault driver's employer, which requires careful documentation of all medical expenses and long-term care needs.

According to National Legal Analyst Stefano Formica, of Counsel at Counsel at Bond Legal. "Injured victims involved in a collision often seek a personal injury claim to cover the cost of medical bills, future medical care, loss of income, emotional trauma, and pain and suffering."

Missouri personal injury framework

Missouri follows a pure comparative fault system. The statute of limitations is 5 years — one of the longest in the nation.

Damages include economic and non-economic losses.
