Zion Branch Killed in Atascocita Car Accident

19-year-old bakery employee fatally struck when vehicle crashes through storefront
Zion Branch, 19, was killed in a motor vehicle accident at a bakery in Atascocita, Texas, on June 30, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
A 70-year-old driver attempting to park outside the storefront accidentally pressed the gas pedal instead of the brake, sending the vehicle surging through the glass facade. The vehicle struck two employees and a customer inside the business.
The teenage worker, Branch, was pronounced dead at the scene. The conditions of the other two people struck were not immediately released.
The driver remained at the scene, investigators said. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case to determine if charges will be filed.
A memorial of flowers continues to grow outside the boarded-up storefront. Family members have established a fundraiser to assist with funeral expenses.
What do we know about Branch's background?
The tragic loss of a young life leaves families and communities searching for answers. Branch had just received her college acceptance letter to the University of Houston hours before the crash, and the Atascocita community has rallied to support her grieving family through local memorials.
How do investigators handle suspected impaired driving crashes?
While initial reports may vary, full investigations often examine all potential cause, including whether impairment played a role. In car accidents such as this, investigators look closely at where a driver may have been prior to the crash.
Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Witness accounts gathered soon after a fatal crash often carry more weight than statements collected days or weeks later, since human memory naturally fades with time and stress. Investigators work to track down bystanders present during the moments before impact."
"An attorney frequently follows up with witnesses independently, preserving testimony and helping surviving relatives build a reliable account of events," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.
The crash adds to a rising toll across the state. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, Texas car accident death in 2024 were 4,150, marking a slight decrease from the previous year but highlighting ongoing safety challenges.
What are the legal options for the victim's family?
Families facing such a sudden loss often must handle complex insurance and liability frameworks while grieving.
In addition to driver liability, investigators will likely examine the commercial property's safety features, as residents noted a similar storefront crash occurred at a nearby business in February.

Texas wrongful death statute
Under Tex. Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code § 71.001, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Texas applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 2 years.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship and consortium, funeral expenses, and mental anguish.
"Insurance companies sometimes offer quick settlements before the full extent of damages becomes clear, leaving surviving relatives vulnerable to inadequate compensation. Legal counsel reviews settlement offers, evaluates financial impact, and negotiates on behalf of grieving families seeking a fair resolution," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.
