How the Highway 74 Motorcycle Crash Unfolded

Authorities were sent to the area near the Devil's Ladder Trail at about 9:15 a.m. Sunday after a report of a crash involving one motorcycle. One of the two people involved died at the scene. The other was flown to a hospital with major injuries.

Help for families who lost someone is below.

What Is Known After the Highway 74 Closure

Crews shut down Highway 74 in both directions for a time while they responded and investigated, and the road has since reopened. Authorities have not released the names of the two people involved. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

People often hear very little from investigators in the first days after a crash. That quiet is normal while evidence is gathered, and it does not mean the case has stalled.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in California usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
