The Morning Crash on Avenue O

The crash happened at 6:14 a.m. The Iowa State Patrol said a 52-year-old man driving a Chevrolet Impala west on Avenue O turned left into a private driveway as Eaves rode east on a motorcycle. The patrol said the Impala driver failed to yield, and the two vehicles collided. Eaves died in the crash.

Where the Iowa State Patrol Review Stands

The Iowa State Patrol is still investigating. The name of the Impala driver has not been released, and no charges have been announced. Authorities have not released further details about the collision.

Police usually wait to release the names of the people involved until their families have been told. That is why names often come out a day or more later.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Iowa usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
