The Late-Night Crash on Fairwood Avenue

Officers with the Columbus Division of Police responded just before midnight to the area near Fairwood and East Innis avenues. Police said a Nissan Rogue was traveling southbound on Fairwood Avenue when it veered left, crossed the centerline and the northbound lanes, and left the roadway. Police said the SUV then hit trees, big rocks and a fence before its driver's side slammed into a utility pole. The driver was rushed to Grant Medical Center in critical condition and died there. Police said the two adult passengers were also brought to Grant Medical Center and were in stable condition.

Help for people affected by a crash is below.

Where the Columbus Police Investigation Stands

The crash remains under investigation. Officials have not identified the driver. Police ask anyone who saw the crash or knows about it to call the department's crash investigators or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers.

Which agency investigates often depends on where the crash happened. Highway crashes are often handled by state police or highway patrol, and crashes on city streets by local officers.

Affected by an accident like this?

Here is what people in Ohio usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.

  2. Your vehicle. Tow yards usually charge for every day a towed vehicle sits there.

  3. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  4. Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
