An Orange Grove woman died and four other people, three of them children, were hurt Wednesday morning, October 21, in a crash at US 281 and County Road 239 in Jim Wells County. The Texas Department of Public Safety identified the woman as Jennifer Lee, 47, who was driving a Ford Explorer.

How the Crash at US 281 Unfolded

Lee was heading west on County Road 239 at about 9:30 a.m. when she came to the stop sign at US 281. DPS said she failed to yield there. DPS said a northbound Chevrolet Silverado then hit the driver's side of her SUV, and both vehicles stopped in the grassy median. She died where the crash happened, and Justice of the Peace Richard DeLeon pronounced her dead.

A 30-year-old Weslaco woman was driving the Silverado with three children, ages 13, 9 and 8. All four went to Driscoll Children's Hospital in Corpus Christi. Their conditions have not been released.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Texas usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
