How the U.S. 62 Truck Crash Unfolded

Around 4:30 p.m., Westfall was heading north on U.S. 62 in a 2016 Nissan Rogue. Troopers said a 2011 Freightliner truck traveling the same direction hit the Rogue as she was slowing to make a left turn. The impact sent the Rogue off the west side of the road, and debris from the collision hit a southbound Ford F-150, causing minor damage. Troopers said the Freightliner's 17-year-old driver suffered minor injuries, while the pickup's driver was unhurt.

Where the Highway Patrol Investigation Stands

Troopers from the patrol's Wilmington Post are still investigating the crash. The highway stayed closed for several hours and opened again a little after 8 p.m. Paint Creek Fire & EMS and University of Cincinnati Air Care responded, with help from the Highland County Coroner's Office and the Ohio Department of Transportation.

Vehicles from a serious crash are often towed to a secure lot and held for inspection. That is a standard step, and the vehicles can be held for weeks.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Ohio usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
