How the Southbound I-5 Crash Unfolded

The collision took place at about 8:30 a.m. The trooper and a Washington State Department of Transportation crew had stopped to help with a King County Metro bus that had stalled on a ramp. The motorhome struck both vehicles from behind while their warning lights were on, according to the State Patrol.

The trooper, who was in the patrol car, reported a concussion and leg pain. A passenger riding in the motorhome broke an ankle. The transportation worker was outside the truck at the time and was not hurt.

Where the State Patrol Review Stands

State Patrol Trooper Rick Johnson said the crash did not appear to involve criminal activity. No charges have been announced, and the investigation remains ongoing. Southbound I-5 was open again by about 1 p.m. Sunday.

Charges are not always decided at the scene. Prosecutors often wait for the full investigation before they decide whether any charges will be filed.

Affected by an accident like this?

Here is what people in Washington usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.

  2. Your vehicle. Tow yards usually charge for every day a towed vehicle sits there.

  3. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  4. Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
