Deputies responded to the area at about 3 p.m. Thursday. The sheriff's office said Etherton was driving a car that turned onto Route 29 from Maloney Road and collided with a tractor trailer heading east. He died of his injuries after he was taken to Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville. The sheriff's office said Etherton had more than 20 years of experience as a state corrections officer.

What the Sheriff's Office Says Comes Next

The sheriff's office said its investigation into the crash is ongoing. It also said the tractor trailer's driver and the trucking company have cooperated with law enforcement. State Police, the state Department of Transportation, Johnstown EMS, Fulton County EMO, Lake Valley Ambulance and the Johnstown and Berkshire fire departments assisted deputies at the scene.

Investigators write down the weather, lighting and road surface after every serious crash. Recording those details is routine and does not point to any single cause.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in New York usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
