Albert Humphrey motorcycle accident on State Road 7, Royal Palm Beach, Florida

The collision occurred at the intersection of State Road 7 and Victoria Groves Boulevard

Florida recorded 578 motorcycle death in 2024, highlighting the severe risks riders face on state roadways. Albert Humphrey, 39, of Royal Palm Beach, was killed in a motorcycle crash on State Road 7 at Victoria Groves Boulevard on Saturday, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌

Investigators from the PBSO Traffic Division are examining the crash site. No charges have been filed.

A northbound 2022 BMW SUV turned into the path of the southbound 2022 Suzuki motorcycle at approximately 9:30 p.m. The bike struck the rear of the SUV, ejecting the rider more than 200 feet. The impact shattered the motorcycle into multiple pieces.

Paramedics took Humphrey to St. Mary’s Medical Center. He was pronounced dead at 10:10 p.m.

The 55-year-old SUV driver suffered minor injuries. The road was closed for several hours while crews cleared the wreckage.

Why did the SUV turn into oncoming traffic on State Road 7?

Left-turn collisions are a frequent cause of rider death, often occurring when drivers fail to accurately judge the speed or distance of an approaching bike. In motorcycle accidents such as this, crash reconstructionists examine intersection sightlines, vehicle data, and right-of-way rules.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Left turns across motorcycle traffic create extremely dangerous situations that investigators examine very carefully. Where the vehicle was heading, how fast the motorcycle was traveling, and what the driver was doing all come together in the investigation."

Families facing a sudden loss often benefit from legal counsel experienced in fatal motorcycle crash investigations. An attorney helps ensure important evidence is protected while providing steady guidance through complex insurance and legal matters, added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

How do speed and ejection distance impact the investigation?

The 200-foot ejection distance will be a key factor for investigators determining the motorcycle's speed prior to impact. Florida crash data indicates that daylight accounts for 56% of motorcycle crashes, making nighttime collisions like this one particularly dangerous due to reduced visibility. Investigators will likely review the SUV's event data recorder and any available surveillance footage to establish the exact sequence of the collision.

"An attorney guides surviving relatives through legal complexities while safeguarding evidence and protecting family interests," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.

Florida wrongful death statute

Under Fla. Stat. § 768.16-768.26, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Florida applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.

Recoverable damages may include loss of support and services, loss of companionship, mental pain and suffering of survivors, and medical/funeral expenses.
