Stephen Erik Campos Arrested in Miami E-Scooter Accident

The collision occurred at the intersection of Northwest 37th Avenue and Northwest 36th Street
A 45-year-old man was arrested Monday after he allegedly ran a red light and critically injured an electric scooter rider in a hit-and-run crash at a Miami intersection, according to the City of Miami Police Department.
Stephen Erik Campos faces charges of leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury. He was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where a judge set his bond at $5,000.
The northbound 2018 Lexus RX 350 driven by Campos failed to stop at Northwest 37th Avenue and Northwest 36th Street. The impact threw the eastbound scooter rider into the vehicle's windshield and driver's side door before they landed in the intersection.
Police said Campos initially fled but later returned after speaking with his wife, telling investigators he believed a rock had struck his windshield.
Miami Fire Rescue took the victim to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center. Doctors determined the rider suffered facial fractures and a brain contusion.
The crash remains under investigation.
How do criminal charges against Campos impact civil liability?
While the criminal case against Campos proceeds, the victim faces immediate physical and financial burdens from severe facial fractures and brain trauma.
Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "When fatigued or distracted drivers fail to notice pedestrians and scooter riders crossing legally, the injuries produced by those collisions often involve lasting neurological damage, significant mobility limitations, and serious emotional consequences that affect entire households for years."
"Legal counsel can preserve crash evidence before conditions change, gather detailed witness accounts, and build a comprehensive injury and loss record that supports a meaningful full recovery," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, e‑scooter injuries have surged nationwide, with head trauma representing about 21% of emergency room visits tied to micromobility crashes.
What happens next for the rider injured on Northwest 37th Avenue?
The road to recovery for riders suffering brain contusions is often long and uncertain, requiring extensive medical intervention.
Individuals involved in e-scooter accidents may have legal options. Consulting a personal injury attorney can help clarify rights and potential claims.
Florida personal injury framework
Florida follows a modified comparative fault (51% bar) system, effective 2023. The statute of limitations was reduced from 4 years to 2 years in 2023.
Damages include economic losses (medical expenses, lost wages) and non-economic losses (pain, suffering). Florida's PIP no-fault insurance covers initial medical costs up to $10,000 regardless of fault.
"Medical bills accumulate quickly after a serious accident, and lost wages compound the financial pressure on recovering individuals. An attorney pursues compensation covering both, building a detailed record of economic harm so any claim reflects the true cost of recovery," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.
