A northbound 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan drifted across the center dividing line and struck a southbound 2000 Freightliner semi-truck towing a dirt trailer. The impact crushed the front of the passenger vehicle. Campbell, a passenger in the SUV, was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene.

The 56-year-old driver of the Dodge also died in the collision.

The driver of the semi-truck suffered minor injuries and was taken to Eastland Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The crash remains under active investigation by state troopers. DPS Sgt. Marc A. Couch reported that the exact reason the vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic has not yet been determined.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, 1,353 people died in single-vehicle run-off-road or cross-center crashes across the state in 2024.

Why did the SUV cross the center line on State Highway 6?

The sudden loss of Campbell has left her family and the Granbury community searching for answers. While the community rallies to support the grieving family, investigators are working to determine what caused the driver to veer into the path of the oncoming semi-truck at the rural intersection.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Unsafe passing on two-lane roads accounts for a significant share of fatal head-on collisions, and the consequences are almost always severe given the combined closing speeds involved."

"Legal counsel working for surviving families moves quickly to secure dashcam footage, business surveillance recordings, and cellphone records, since that evidence can disappear within days without a timely formal preservation request," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

What role does the seatbelt investigation play?

DPS reports indicate the passenger was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. In complex fatal crashes, crash reconstructionists analyze vehicle data recorders and physical evidence to understand the sequence of events and impact forces.

Texas wrongful death statute

Under Tex. Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code § 71.001, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Texas applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 2 years.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship and consortium, funeral expenses, and mental anguish.

"Fatal head-on collisions often leave surviving families overwhelmed by competing insurance claims, unresolved liability questions, and mounting financial pressure," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.

"An attorney can review what contributed to the crash, retain reconstruction experts, locate witnesses, and examine applicable coverage, while serving as a steady advocate who protects the interests of surviving relatives throughout what is almost always an incredibly difficult process."
