The crash occurred when an 18-wheeler hydroplaned and crossed into oncoming traffic on Highway 80

David Earl Johnson, 45, of Grand Saline, was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 80 near Mineola, Texas, on Sunday, according to the Department of Public Safety.‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍

An eastbound 18-wheeler hydroplaned, crossed into the westbound lane and struck an oncoming passenger vehicle. Video from the scene showed the tractor-trailer caught fire after the collision.

The driver of the passenger vehicle, Johnson, died at the scene.

The condition of the truck driver has not been reported. Troopers continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the wreck.

According to the National Safety Council, Texas recorded 720 deaths from large‑truck crashes in 2024, the highest number in the nation.

Why did the 18-wheeler hydroplane on Highway 80?

Investigators are working to determine the exact sequence of events that caused the 18-wheeler to lose traction and cross into oncoming traffic. In truck accidents such as this, crash reconstructionists examine tire tread depth, vehicle speed, and load weight to understand how control was lost.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Passenger vehicles are fundamentally outmatched when a fully loaded semi-truck enters the equation, and the outcome often reflects that imbalance completely. The weight differential, combined with commercial trailer height and highway momentum, leaves occupants of smaller vehicles with almost no survival margin during a serious impact."

"Legal counsel can move quickly to secure trucking records and protect surviving relatives," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

What are the next steps for Johnson's family?

The family of Johnson faces a sudden and tragic loss following the collision. While authorities continue their work, independent investigations often run parallel to official inquiries to preserve critical evidence like electronic logging device data and maintenance records.

Families navigating the aftermath of a fatal commercial collision frequently encounter immediate contact from corporate insurance adjusters. Understanding the full scope of commercial liability is a critical step in protecting the rights of the surviving estate.

Texas wrongful death statute

Under Tex. Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code § 71.001, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Texas applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 2 years.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship and consortium, funeral expenses, and mental anguish.

"After a fatal crash, insurance carriers often contact surviving relatives quickly, presenting settlement offers before financial losses are fully known," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.

"Legal counsel reviews every offer, making sure no settlement closes before all financial damages and ongoing hardship are properly identified."
