A westbound 2021 Ford Edge SUV crossed the center line and struck an eastbound 2005 Lincoln LS passenger car. The 22-year-old woman driving the SUV drifted into the opposing lane just after 2:30 p.m., investigators said.

Dalton, who was a passenger in the Lincoln, was airlifted to UW Hospital. She died from her injuries the following day. An 87-year-old woman who was also riding in the Lincoln was taken to the hospital and later died.

The crash remains under investigation.

Detectives have not released information regarding potential charges or the exact cause of the lane departure.

Nearly 30% of Wisconsin traffic death involve an impaired driver, according to state Department of Transportation data.

How do wrong-way and impaired driving crashes impact Columbia County?

Head-on collisions frequently result in severe trauma due to the combined velocity of the vehicles at the point of impact. When a driver crosses a center line, investigators routinely examine toxicology reports, phone records, and event data recorders to determine why the vehicle departed its lane.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Head-on collisions caused by unsafe passing happen in a split second, often on rural highways with poor visibility and narrow lanes. The damage tends to be severe, with commercial trucks and passenger vehicles suffering catastrophic structural failure."

"A legal team moves quickly to secure vehicle logs, review dash camera footage, and examine skid marks before roadway conditions quickly change," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

Why are rural highways like County Highway CM vulnerable?

Two-lane rural roads lack physical medians to separate opposing traffic, leaving little room for error if a driver becomes incapacitated or distracted. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, rural areas account for a disproportionate number of traffic death nationwide, often exacerbated by higher speeds and longer emergency response times.

Wisconsin wrongful death statute

Under Wis. Stat. § 895.04, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Wisconsin applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 3 years.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of society and companionship, funeral expenses, and the estate's losses.

"Acting quickly after a fatal crash often determines whether grieving families retain the right to pursue legal action later. Serving as an advocate, an attorney explains applicable deadlines clearly, helping families further understand available options without unnecessary delay or confusion," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.
