What Happened on Greene County 20 in Boligee

The crash happened around 9:40 a.m. on Saturday near Saved Lane. State troopers said the 15-year-old rode as a passenger in a 2009 Kia Spectra that went off the road, went into a ditch and then struck a tree. The teenager died at the scene, according to the agency. A 17-year-old driver from Boligee was flown by air ambulance to a hospital. A 12-year-old passenger from Eutaw was also hurt and was transported to a hospital in the area.

What the Highway Patrol Is Still Investigating

Troopers with the agency's Highway Patrol Division continue to investigate. Investigators have not announced why the Kia left the road, and they have not said whether speed or other factors played a part. Authorities have not released the identity of the teenager who died, and the conditions of the two hurt juveniles have not been made public.

Investigators work quickly at the scene because marks on the road and other evidence fade fast. Much of the slower work happens later, away from the scene.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Alabama usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
