How to get a copy of your crash report
Each state sets its own rules and fees. Pick the state to see how it works there.
How it works in most states
- 1
Know why it matters.
The report names everyone involved and records what happened. Insurers rely on it, and any claim you make is built on it.
- 2
Find who holds it.
The police agency that responded, or your state DMV. Searching your state plus "crash report request" usually points you to the right form.
- 3
Request a copy.
Copies go to those involved: a driver, passenger, or owner, or their attorney or insurer. Have the date, the location, and names or a report number ready, then request it online, by mail, or in person, usually for a small fee. It is ready in about 1 to 2 weeks.
