Carmen Illapa, 78, of Stamford, was killed in a pedestrian crash on Progress Drive early Friday, according to the Stamford Police Department.
A 2022 Ford Escape struck the woman as she crossed the street, investigators said. The 28-year-old driver stopped immediately. Paramedics initially transported Illapa to Stamford Hospital with life-threatening injuries. She was pronounced dead Friday afternoon.
No charges have been filed. The driver is cooperating with authorities.
Connecticut Department of Transportation data shows 64 pedestrian deaths statewide in 2023, reflecting a rising trend in vulnerable road user death.
