What Happened on E. Main Street

Police said a call came in around 10 a.m. about a collision between a car and a bicyclist in the 2100 block of E. Main Street. Medics with the Grand Prairie Fire Department pronounced the cyclist dead at the scene. Investigators said the cyclist was riding westbound on the eastbound shoulder. Police said a driver who had stopped at the intersection of Bill Irwin Street then pulled onto Main Street, and the cyclist was hit. Police said the driver was not injured.

Where the Grand Prairie Police Investigation Stands

Grand Prairie police said the investigation is ongoing, and the driver is cooperating with investigators. The Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office will release the cyclist's identity once next of kin have been notified. No charges have been announced.

Which agency investigates often depends on where the crash happened. Highway crashes are often handled by state police or highway patrol, and crashes on city streets by local officers.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Texas usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
