Abigail Akers car accident on Airport Road, Temple, Texas

A 21-year-old Moffat woman died after a vehicle crossed the center line on Airport Road

Abigail Akers, 21, of Moffat, was killed in a three-vehicle crash at Airport Road and Westfield Boulevard on June 9, according to the Temple Police Department.‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍

A preliminary investigation revealed that a vehicle crossed the center line into oncoming traffic and struck two other cars. Emergency crews diverted traffic down Research Parkway and Westfield Boulevard while the Traffic Reconstruction Unit processed the scene for several hours.

Justice of the Peace Larry Wilkey pronounced Akers dead at the scene. Paramedics took two other people to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation. Authorities have not released the identities of the other drivers involved or announced any charges.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, 4,291 people died in traffic crashes statewide in 2023.

When a driver crosses a center line, investigators must determine what caused the deviation, examining factors such as distracted driving, impairment, or medical emergencies.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "When a vehicle leaves its lane and enters oncoming traffic, the outcome is rarely minor, and occupants on both sides often face catastrophic trauma that reshapes entire families in an instant. Investigators examining these crashes look closely at roadway conditions, vehicle data, and driver behavior in the moments before impact."

"Legal counsel preserving that evidence early can be the difference between fair compensation and a family left without answers," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

Why did the vehicle cross the center line on Airport Road?

While Temple Police reconstruct the three-vehicle crash, independent legal professionals often review skid marks, vehicle data recorders, and witness statements to establish a clear timeline of events. Identifying the exact sequence that led the at-fault driver into oncoming traffic is critical for establishing liability.

Texas wrongful death statute

Under Tex. Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code § 71.001, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Texas applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 2 years.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship and consortium, funeral expenses, and mental anguish.

"Experienced legal teams can navigate insurance disputes while helping surviving relatives pursue the full range of compensation available after a fatal crash, because the financial and personal losses families carry forward rarely fit neatly into what insurers are willing to offer," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.
