David Keith Engel Killed in Athens Moped Accident

66-year-old rider dies weeks after collision with turning vehicle on Lexington Road
David Keith Engel, 66, of Athens, was killed in a moped crash on Lexington Road near East Meadows Drive in Athens, Georgia, on June 12, according to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.
The driver of the second vehicle, a 26-year-old man, faces possible criminal charges in connection with the fatal collision. Investigators said the eastbound red 2014 Honda Accord turned left into the path of the westbound 2025 moped.
The moped, driven by Engel, struck the front right passenger door of the Honda. The impact ejected the rider from the bike. Paramedics took Engel to a local hospital with serious injuries. He died weeks later on July 1.
The crash remains under investigation.
Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact Sergeant Schill at 762-400-7092.
Why did the Honda turn into oncoming traffic on Lexington Road?
While Athens-Clarke County police determine the exact sequence of events that led the driver of the Honda to turn into the moped's path, investigators will review right-of-way laws and potential driver distraction.
In crashes such as this, intersection dynamics are heavily scrutinized.
Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Modern crash reconstruction technology plays a critical role in understanding how fatal moped collisions unfold across busy roadways and intersections. Detailed analysis involving vehicle damage, roadway measurements, and electronic data helps clarify circumstances surrounding catastrophic impacts."
"Surviving families deserve clear answers during difficult moments after tragic loss. An attorney can coordinate independent investigations, preserve evidence, and advocate for fair recovery," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 39,254 people died in traffic crashes nationwide in 2024, with intersections remaining a primary location for fatal multi-vehicle collisions.
What legal rights does Engel's family have?
The victim's family may face significant emotional and financial hurdles following the weeks-long hospitalization and subsequent death. When a driver faces potential criminal charges for a fatal left-turn collision, parallel civil avenues often become necessary.
Georgia wrongful death statute
Under O.C.G.A. § 51-4-1, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Georgia applies modified comparative fault (50% bar). The statute of limitations is 2 years.
Recoverable damages focus on the full value of the life of the decedent, including both economic and intangible losses.
"Families going through a wrongful death case need steady contact, not silence during a stressful and confusing time. Serving as an advocate, an attorney stays available for calls and questions, offering reassurance and clear answers whenever a family needs support," explained Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.
