Dean McCain motorcycle accident on North Union Boulevard, Colorado Springs, Colorado

The 20-year-old rider died following a collision with a pickup truck at Dublin and North Union Boulevards

Dean McCain, 20, was killed in a motorcycle crash at the corner of Dublin and North Union Boulevards on July 5, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department.

The northbound motorcycle collided with a westbound pickup truck at the intersection just before 10 p.m., investigators said. Paramedics took McCain to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. He later died despite medical intervention, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office reported.

The Major Crash Team is investigating the collision.

Detectives are examining whether speed played a role in the crash.

Colorado motorcycle death reached a record 165 in 2024, marking a 22% increase from the previous year, according to state transportation data. El Paso County frequently records the highest number of fatal motorcycle crashes in the state.

How do intersection dynamics affect motorcycle crashes?

When a motorcycle and a larger vehicle collide at an intersection, the lack of structural protection for the rider often results in catastrophic injuries.

Investigators will examine right-of-way, signal timing, and vehicle speeds to determine exactly how the two vehicles converged at Dublin and North Union Boulevards.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Visibility failures cause motorcycle collisions when drivers fail to detect motorcycles during lane changes or turns. A motorcycle occupies minimal roadway space, creating detection difficulties in blind spots and low-light conditions."

"An attorney coordinates evidence collection from security cameras, traffic signals, and testimony to demonstrate driver negligence and secure compensation for injured riders and surviving family members facing medical hardships," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

What does crash data reveal about El Paso County?

The sudden loss of a young family member leaves relatives searching for answers, especially when traffic death are rising locally. Colorado Springs police noted this incident marks the city's 31st traffic death of the year, outpacing the previous year's count.

Statewide data shows El Paso County consistently ranks among the highest for fatal motorcycle collisions, often driven by intersection conflicts and speed differentials.

Colorado wrongful death statute

Under C.R.S. § 13-21-201, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Colorado applies modified comparative fault (50% bar). The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and net pecuniary loss.

"Surviving relatives face ongoing financial pressure from lost income, funeral expenses, medical bills, and emotional trauma aftermath," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.

"An attorney coordinating insurance recovery, settlement negotiations, and litigation ensures families receive compensation addressing immediate needs and building long-term financial security going forward."
