The Early Morning Crash on the Trans-Manhattan Expressway

The crash happened at about 5:19 a.m. on the upper eastbound lanes of the expressway, which links the George Washington Bridge with the Alexander Hamilton Bridge. A motorcycle and a tractor-trailer collided. Authorities said the motorcyclist died where the crash happened. The truck driver was not hurt. The upper-level lanes into Manhattan were closed after the crash.

How Traffic and the Investigation Stand Now

Officials in Fort Lee asked drivers to stay off the bridge until at least noon while the crash was investigated. The Palisades Parkway Police Department told drivers to plan on delays of about six hours. By 8 a.m., one left lane on the upper level heading into Manhattan had reopened. The motorcyclist's name has not been released, and no charges have been announced.

Which agency investigates often depends on where the crash happened. Highway crashes are often handled by state police or highway patrol, and crashes on city streets by local officers.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in New York usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
