The Harris Road Crash at Marin Street

Police said the call about several people struck came in at roughly 6:36 p.m., and officers went to the 3800 block of Harris Road. Police said a red sedan was heading east when the collision happened at the Marin Street intersection. Police said the four pedestrians were in an unmarked crosswalk at the time. They were the 12-year-old girl, another juvenile and two adults, and all four were taken to a hospital for treatment. The girl was later pronounced dead. Witnesses said many families and children were out trick-or-treating nearby that evening.

What Bakersfield Police Are Still Working to Learn

The Kern County Coroner's Office is expected to release the girl's identity later. Police said the driver remained at the scene and has cooperated with investigators. Police are asking anyone with details about the crash to phone the department's tip line at 661-327-7111.

Many newer cars keep a short record of the moments around a crash. Investigators may download that data, and making sense of it can take weeks.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in California usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
