The southbound 2023 Kia Forte attempted a left turn and collided with an oncoming northbound 2016 Dodge Ram pickup truck at approximately 10:10 p.m. The impact crushed the passenger side of the sedan.

Paramedics took Spokony, a passenger in the Kia, to NYU Langone Hospital–Suffolk, where he was pronounced dead. The 79-year-old driver of the Kia was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The 55-year-old driver of the pickup truck received treatment for minor injuries.

Detectives impounded both vehicles for safety checks.

The Major Case Unit continues to investigate the crash.

Why do left-turn collisions occur at intersections like Waverly Avenue?

Intersection crashes frequently involve vehicles attempting to cross oncoming traffic lanes. In accidents such as this, crash reconstruction investigators examine signal timing, driver sightlines, and vehicle speeds to determine how the collision unfolded.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Passengers killed in crossing-path collisions are rarely the primary focus of early investigative efforts, which tend to center on driver actions and signal sequences rather than occupant harm."

"Serving as an advocate, an attorney can document injuries, challenge disputed liability findings, and pursue compensation on behalf of surviving relatives facing profound financial and emotional loss," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

What role does crash data play in understanding North Patchogue accidents?

Statewide data highlights the risks present on local roadways. According to the New York State Comptroller's Office, urban roadways account for the majority of fatal crashes in the state, with death on these roads rising 68% since 2017. Investigators will review the history of collisions at Waverly Avenue and Buckley Road to identify any systemic design issues or visibility obstructions that may have contributed to the wreck.

New York wrongful death statute

Under N.Y. EPTL § 5-4.1, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. New York applies pure comparative fault. The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of parental guidance, funeral expenses, and the decedent's conscious pain and suffering.

"Legal counsel can help deeply grief-stricken families navigate a wrongful death claim, recover damages for financial losses, and ensure surviving relatives are not pressured into settling for less than deserved," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.
