Ismael Santiago Basantez-Ramon motorcycle accident on Cross River Drive, Riverhead, New York

The 22-year-old motorcyclist collided with a pickup truck turning left at the intersection of Union Avenue

Ismael Santiago Basantez-Ramon, 22, was killed in a motorcycle crash on Cross River Drive at Union Avenue in Riverhead on Tuesday, according to police.

A northbound 2022 CFMoto driven by Basantez-Ramon struck a pickup truck that was making a left turn into the travel lanes.

Officers arrived at the scene at approximately 7:57 a.m. Paramedics with the Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported him to Peconic Bay Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the pickup truck was taken to the same hospital for treatment and later released.

Detectives and the State Police Accident Reconstruction Team are investigating the collision. Authorities do not suspect criminal activity.

The sudden loss of a young life in a traffic collision deeply affects the surrounding community, leaving families searching for answers. While the investigation continues, National Legal Analyst Stefano Formica, of Bond Legal, noted that independent reviews are important in cases such as this to ensure all causes are identified.

"In motorcycle crashes, left-turn collisions are tragically common and often stem from a driver's failure to yield the right of way," Formica said. "A thorough reconstruction examines sightlines, vehicle speeds, and intersection design to understand exactly why the turning motorist failed to see the oncoming rider."

Intersections like the one at Union Avenue require drivers to accurately judge the speed and distance of approaching traffic before turning. When a larger vehicle turns across the path of a smaller, less visible motorcycle, the resulting impact is often catastrophic for the rider.

Insurance adjusters frequently attempt to assign partial blame to motorcyclists following a crash, even when the other driver initiated the turn.

National Legal Analyst Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, explained that "Motorcycle crash cases require aggressive preservation of evidence, including skid marks and electronic data, to protect the victim's family from unfair liability shifts by insurance companies."

The State Police Accident Reconstruction Team uses advanced forensic techniques to map the crash scene. Investigators will analyze the point of impact, vehicle damage, and roadway evidence to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the fatal collision.

Under New York's wrongful death statute (E.P.T.L. § 5-4.1), the personal representative of a deceased victim's estate may pursue a civil action against the at-fault party. This legal framework allows surviving family members to seek accountability when a driver's negligence, such as failing to yield during a left turn, results in a fatal collision. National Legal Analyst Bond noted that "Wrongful death claims in New York are complex and require a meticulous demonstration of negligence to ensure the responsible parties are held fully accountable for the family's loss."

Families may be entitled to recover damages for medical expenses incurred prior to death, funeral costs, and the loss of future financial support. New York law generally requires wrongful death lawsuits to be filed within two years from the date of the victim's passing, making the prompt preservation of crash scene evidence essential for a successful claim.
