City firefighters and paramedics arrived at the 600 block just before 1:30 p.m. to find a southbound Hyundai Elantra that had crashed into a tree. The 20-year-old driver and the front-seat passenger were trapped inside the wreckage, while an 18-year-old male passenger was found lying on the ground outside the vehicle.

Rescuers transported all three passengers to Yale New Haven Hospital. The front-seat passenger, Hernandez, later died from her injuries.

The driver remains in critical condition, and the teenage passenger suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The department's Crash Reconstruction Unit has taken over the investigation to determine why the vehicle left the road. No charges have been filed.

Why did the Hyundai leave Woodward Avenue?

While the cause of a crash remains under investigation, Andrew G. Finkelstein, managing partner at Jacoby & Meyers Law Offices and a national legal analyst for Accident News, said, "Time is of the essence in serious investigations, where evidence must be reviewed promptly and carefully. Legal counsel can help ensure records are preserved efficiently and manage insurance complications, offering surviving relatives timely guidance and structured support."

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, single‑vehicle roadway departures represent a significant share of traffic deaths nationwide. These crashes often reflect overlapping factors such as speed, distraction, or sudden evasive actions, underscoring the complexity of modern traffic safety challenges.

What are the options for the injured passenger?

"Passengers involved in car crashes are typically the most innocent parties, yet they frequently encounter resistance from insurance adjusters seeking to minimize payouts," Finkelstein said. "A skilled legal advocate can help protect their rights and pursue the compensation they deserve."

Determining the exact sequence of events will be critical for the surviving passenger and the deceased victim's family as they evaluate their legal options.

Connecticut wrongful death and personal injury claims

Finkelstein noted, “Wrongful death claims arising from car accidents require a thorough demonstration of negligence, making early evidence preservation and skilled reconstruction essential to building a strong case.”

Surviving family members may be entitled to compensation for funeral expenses, medical bills incurred prior to death, and the loss of the victim's earning capacity and companionship. For the injured passenger, Connecticut's personal injury laws permit claims for medical costs, lost wages, and pain and suffering. The state enforces a strict two-year statute of limitations for filing both wrongful death and personal injury lawsuits, underscoring the need for timely legal counsel.
