43-year-old driver charged with operating under the influence after striking person on Norfolk Road shoulder

A pedestrian was injured when they were struck by a vehicle on Norfolk Road in Torrington, Connecticut, on May 1, according to police.​‍​‌​‍​​‌​‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌​‌‌​‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍​‌‌‌​‍‍‍‍‌​‍​‍‍‍​​‍​

Michael Whittaker, 43, was charged with operating under the influence after calling authorities to report the collision. He was held on a $2,500 nonsurety bond and is scheduled to appear in Torrington Superior Court on May 11.

The northbound driver told investigators he hit an unknown object before realizing he had struck a person walking on the shoulder of the northbound lane. Officers administered a field sobriety test after observing signs of impairment.

Paramedics treated the victim at the scene. The pedestrian was taken to a local hospital with undisclosed injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
