Joel Ellestad, 22, was killed in a head-on crash on U.S. Highway 259 near DeKalb, Texas, on July 11, according to the Department of Public Safety.‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍

A northbound Nissan Altima crossed into the southbound lane and struck the Dodge Charger that the victim was riding in. Ellestad was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other passengers in the Charger, along with the at-fault driver of the Altima, were also killed in the collision.

The crash remains under investigation.

No further details have been released.

According to the Federal Highway Administration, head-on crashes accounted for roughly 14% of all U.S. traffic fatalities each year and were linked to 15,744 roadway departure deaths from 2016 to 2018, averaging 5,248 fatalities annually.

The sudden loss of a loved one in a head-on collision leaves families devastated and searching for answers. When a driver crosses the center line, establishing liability is a critical step for the surviving family members of the victims.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Roadway departures often happen faster than any driver can correct for, sending a vehicle across a center line into oncoming traffic within a heartbeat. Barrier design and shoulder conditions sometimes become relevant afterward."

"An attorney works alongside engineers and reconstruction specialists to review skid marks, debris fields, and roadway maintenance history while addressing medical costs mounting for surviving family members," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

Why did the vehicle cross the center line on U.S. Highway 259?

Investigators will examine a crash site south of DeKalb to determine if distracted driving, fatigue, or impairment caused the northbound driver to veer into oncoming traffic. Independent investigations often uncover important evidence regarding vehicle speed and trajectory.

What are the legal options for the victim's family?

While the Department of Public Safety continues its probe, families of victims killed in cross-centerline crashes often face immediate financial and emotional burdens. Individuals involved in fatal car accidents may have legal options. Consulting a personal injury attorney can help clarify rights and potential claims.

Texas wrongful death statute

Under Tex. Civ. Prac. & Rem. Code § 71.001, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. Texas applies modified comparative fault (51% bar). The statute of limitations is 2 years.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship and consortium, funeral expenses, and mental anguish.

"Witness coordination becomes critical soon after a catastrophic collision, since memories fade fast and accounts can shift once people compare stories or read news coverage online. Reaching people early, before details blur, often produces steadier and more reliable testimony overall," noted Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.

"Serving as an advocate, an attorney frequently tracks down witnesses directly, documenting statements early and keeping communication open for surviving relatives throughout a lengthy process."
