Bessemer, AlabamaPublished 1 min read

John Ray Corkren, 80, of Bessemer, was killed in a car crash on Morgan Road in Bessemer on October 13, according to the Jefferson County Coroner's Office.

The Head-On Collision on Morgan Road

The crash occurred at 8:20 a.m. in the 2500 block of Morgan Road. Corkren was the driver of one of the vehicles involved in the head-on collision and was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:38 a.m. The driver of the other vehicle was taken to UAB Hospital.

Why Head-On Car Crashes Turn Severe

According to IIHS, Alabama saw 974 traffic deaths in 2023. The two vehicles met head-on on Morgan Road. Head-on collisions concentrate the force of both vehicles into a single impact, leaving drivers with little protection even in a low-speed encounter. Combined closing speeds and limited time to react make these crashes among the most deadly type of two-vehicle collision.

Where the Bessemer Police Investigation Stands

Bessemer police are investigating the crash, and no charges have been announced. Officials have not released details about the other driver or confirmed whether a final report has been completed.

Investigators pull data from onboard recorders, study the pattern of damage on each vehicle, and review any nearby camera footage to reconstruct the moments leading up to the collision.
