Porum, OklahomaPublished 2 min read

John W. Head, 41, of Porum, and Dawn M. Head, 50, of Porum, were killed in a crash on Oklahoma Highway 2 in Porum on October 11, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

How the Oklahoma Highway 2 Crash Unfolded

At around 9:36 p.m., Head was driving a golf cart with no lights along Oklahoma Highway 2. Another vehicle traveling south on the highway struck the golf cart, causing it to overturn. Both Head and passenger Dawn M. Head were ejected and died as a result of the collision.

What Makes Crashes Like This So Serious

According to IIHS, Oklahoma saw 718 traffic fatalities in 2023. The golf cart was traveling along a highway after dark without lights when it was struck by another vehicle. Low visibility at night is a significant factor in many highway crashes, and smaller, slower vehicles without proper lighting can be especially difficult for other drivers to detect in time. Road conditions, vehicle size, and the absence of protective features all affect how severe the outcome of a nighttime collision becomes. In a past interview with Accident News, Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, who has represented families after fatal highway crashes, said, "Every serious crash has a chain of events behind it, and the causes are rarely obvious at first glance. Speed, road conditions, driver attention, and vehicle condition all shape how a collision happens and how severe it becomes."

Where the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Investigation Stands

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. No charges have been announced, and no further details about the other vehicle or its driver have been released. Bond added, "Fault in a car crash turns on the rules of the road, so investigators reconstruct the collision from each vehicle's onboard data recorder, the skid marks and damage patterns, and any traffic-camera footage to work out the sequence in the seconds before impact."
