Joshua Anderson Sherrill faces charges of driving under the influence, failure to maintain a lane and serious injury by vehicle. Deputies said he admitted to consuming alcohol before the wreck.

The northbound 2020 Subaru Outback crossed into the southbound lane at approximately 10:45 p.m. and struck a 2017 Ford Edge. Following the impact, one of the vehicles became fully engulfed in flames.

Paramedics transported both drivers to a local hospital for treatment. Hart County Fire and EMS crews assisted at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation. Authorities have not released the name or condition of the Ford Edge driver.

While criminal charges hold impaired drivers accountable to the state, victims often face a separate battle to recover from physical and financial losses. The criminal proceedings establish fault, but they do not automatically compensate the injured parties for their medical bills or vehicle replacement.

National Legal Analyst Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal, noted that "In DUI accidents, the criminal investigation provides crucial evidence, such as toxicology reports and field sobriety tests, which can later substantiate a civil claim for the injured parties."

What are the legal options for the injured Ford Edge driver?

National Legal Analyst Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, noted that "Victims of drunk driving accidents have the right to pursue a civil lawsuit independent of the criminal proceedings, allowing them to seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and emotional distress."

Georgia personal injury and DUI liability

Injured parties typically have two years from the date of the crash to file a personal injury lawsuit in Georgia. Compensation categories can include past and future medical bills, rehabilitation costs, property damage, and pain and suffering.
