15-year-old passenger dies after vehicle strikes guardrail and overturns on Highway 1
Josue Villanueva Sandoval, 15, of Cambria, was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 1 near Sea West Road in Harmony on Aug. 14, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The southbound Chevrolet Camaro struck a guardrail before plunging down an embankment. The vehicle then hit a large rock and overturned, investigators said. Paramedics pronounced the teenage passenger, Sandoval, dead at the scene. The 18-year-old driver suffered minor injuries, while a 17-year-old passenger sustained major injuries and a 19-year-old woman from Paso Robles was treated for moderate injuries.
Community members have organized multiple fundraisers to assist the grieving family with funeral expenses. A drive-thru barbecue and bake sale is scheduled for Sept. 16 at the Cambria Vets Hall, alongside an ongoing online donation campaign.
The crash remains under investigation.
No charges have been announced.
Why did the Camaro leave Highway 1?
While the community rallies to support Sandoval's mother, investigators are working to determine what caused the driver to lose control on the coastal highway.

Single-vehicle rollover crashes often require extensive forensic analysis to determine factors such as vehicle speed, driver distraction, or mechanical failure. According to NHTSA FARS data, California had 3,876 traffic fatalities in 2024. Of these, 2,208 (57%) occurred in single-vehicle crashes.

Community members have quickly mobilized to assist the grieving family, organizing multiple fundraisers to help cover funeral expenses. As the family focuses on memorial arrangements, legal practitioners note that independent investigations are often necessary to secure critical evidence from the crash scene.
In cases involving passenger death, preserving the vehicle's event data recorder and documenting the road conditions can be vital for establishing liability.
California wrongful death statute
Under Cal. Code Civ. Proc. § 377.60, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. California applies pure comparative fault. The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and the decedent's pre-death pain and suffering.
