Matthew Harper Killed in Bakersfield Pedestrian Accident
The collision occurred in the 2000 block of Wible Road near Valley Plaza Mall
Matthew David Harper, 36, of Bakersfield, was killed in a pedestrian crash on Wible Road near Ming Avenue in Bakersfield on Aug. 19, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.
The southbound vehicle struck the man at approximately 9:20 p.m. as he crossed the 2000 block of the road outside of a marked crosswalk near Valley Plaza Mall. Paramedics transported Harper to Kern Medical, where he later died from his injuries, the Kern County Coroner’s Office reported.
The driver, identified only as a woman, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Police said she showed no signs of impairment and speed did not appear to be a factor.
The crash remains under investigation. Authorities have not announced any citations or charges.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 7,080 pedestrians were killed in U.S. traffic crashes in 2024. California recorded 1,090 pedestrian fatalities that year, making it the state with the highest pedestrian death count nationwide.
