Motorcyclist Jorge Martinez, 37, of Kihei, was killed in a crash on Piilani Highway in Kihei on October 23, according to the Maui Police Department.
The Evening Collision on Piilani Highway
The collision happened at about 7:34 p.m. Police said a white 2013 Ford Edge was heading east on Kaonoulu Street and made a left turn onto northbound Piilani Highway. Police said a red 2013 Harley-Davidson motorcycle was traveling south in the outer lane of the highway when it struck the Ford.
Police said Martinez was wearing a helmet and was thrown from the motorcycle. He was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The Ford's operator, an 18-year-old Kihei male, was not hurt.
What the Maui Police Department Reports Next
Police said the Ford's operator was arrested on suspicion of negligent injury in the third degree. He was later released pending further investigation. The Maui Police Department described its findings as preliminary, and the investigation continues.
Investigators often ask nearby homes and businesses for camera video soon after a crash. Many systems record over old footage after a few days or weeks, so they move fast.
