A moving vehicle struck a parked car in the 3400 block of Ramona Avenue just after 7:45 a.m., pushing the stationary vehicle into Gebretsadik, investigators said. The driver of the moving vehicle fled the scene before officers arrived.

Gebretsadik suffered blunt force injuries to the head. Paramedics took him to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he died on June 29, the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office reported.

The suspect remains at large. Officers later found the suspect's vehicle abandoned, but no description of the driver has been released.

Detectives with the department’s Major Collision Investigation Unit have taken over the case.

The crash remains under investigation.

How common are hit-and-run death in California?

Pedestrians account for more than half of these deaths, as human bodies have little protection against the secondary impacts of multi-vehicle collisions.

What happens next in the Sacramento investigation?

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Evidence preservation becomes urgent almost immediately after a pedestrian is struck and killed by a fleeing driver, because physical clues deteriorate fast and memories fade even faster. Debris gets cleared, weather washes away tire marks, and witnesses forget small details within days."

"An experienced attorney documents roadway conditions promptly, secures photographs, and locks down records before crucial evidence disappears completely," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

How does an abandoned vehicle impact the case?

Legal professionals who handle hit-and-run pedestrian accidents emphasize the importance of preserving surveillance footage from nearby businesses along Power Inn Road to piece together the suspect's movements before and after the collision.

California wrongful death statute

Under Cal. Code Civ. Proc. § 377.60, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. California applies pure comparative fault. The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.

Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and the decedent's pre-death pain and suffering.

"Recognizing the emotional toll after losing a loved one, legal counsel connects grieving families with counseling resources, remains patient during difficult conversations, and listens carefully to concerns," explained Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.
