Lisa Wilner Killed in Rutherford County Truck Accident

The collision occurred in the westbound lanes of Interstate 24 near mile marker 67.
Lisa Wilner, 58, was killed in a collision with a commercial semi-truck on Interstate 24 in Rutherford County, Tennessee, on Thursday, April 16, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
A westbound 2022 Chevrolet Silverado rear-ended the trailer of the semi-truck and became wedged underneath it. Both vehicles eventually came to a stop in the travel lanes.
The 72-year-old driver of the pickup truck also died in the crash. The operator of the commercial vehicle was not injured.
Troopers continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the underride collision. No further details regarding road conditions or vehicle speeds were immediately released.
Why did the pickup go underneath the semi-truck on Interstate 24?
While authorities work to determine why the pickup collided with the rear of the trailer, investigators routinely examine commercial load dynamics and whether sudden braking or trailer movement played a role. National Legal Analyst Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, stated, "The data on cargo failures tells a story of preventable tragedies that shouldn't happen. Shifting loads can cause a waterfall event where the weight literally flips the trailer, leaving other drivers with no place to go."
According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, more than 131,000 fatal and non-fatal crashes involving large trucks and buses occurred nationwide in a recent year. In collisions between large trucks and passenger vehicles, passenger vehicle passengers account for approximately 70% of deaths.
What are the legal rights for a passenger's family?
Passengers like Wilner are rarely at fault in rear-end collisions, leaving grieving families to handle complex claims involving both the driver's auto insurance and the commercial trucking company's policies. Stefano Formica, Of Bond Legal, observed that "The sheer size of a commercial rig makes any mistake on the road a matter of life and death."
