How the McKay Creek Road Crash Happened

A driver reported a man lying in a field shortly after 5 a.m. and told Crook County 911 dispatchers the man did not appear to be breathing. Crook County sheriff's deputies and Prineville police officers went to the scene. Investigators said Sampson had been heading south on McKay Creek Road, apparently picking up cans along the shoulder, when a car going north hit him. He was dressed in dark camouflage clothing and blue jeans, according to the sheriff's office report. Sampson died, and his family has been told, the sheriff's office said.

Where the Crook County Investigation Stands

The Crook County Sheriff's Office said its investigation is ongoing. According to the sheriff's office, the driver pulled over, called 911 right away and worked with deputies. The driver was not hurt, and deputies found no sign of intoxication, the sheriff's office said. Oregon State Police, Crook County Fire and Rescue, the Crook County Road Department, Crook County 911 and Prineville Funeral Home also assisted, the sheriff's office said.

When police say a crash is still under investigation, it usually means they are still collecting evidence and have not reached any conclusions.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Oregon usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
