The Colorado State Patrol said the motorcyclist was heading west on Terminal Avenue at about 3:45 a.m. The patrol said preliminary reports indicate he failed to make a proper turn onto Conrad Street and struck a concrete barrier. The patrol said the rider was ejected. The rider died at the scene, which is just north of Peterson Space Force Base.

What the State Patrol Has Yet to Determine

The Colorado State Patrol is investigating the crash, and the cause remains undetermined. The El Paso County Coroner's Office is expected to release the man's identity at a later date. Part of Terminal Avenue near Conrad Street stayed closed for several hours.

Investigators often ask nearby homes and businesses for camera video soon after a crash. Many systems record over old footage after a few days or weeks, so they move fast.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Colorado usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
