What Happened at the Omak Crosswalk on SR-97

The collision happened at about 9:16 p.m. near the intersection of Highway 97 and Engh Road, the State Patrol said. Troopers said a silver 2001 Nissan Sentra was traveling northbound when Obryan stepped into the crosswalk. The car struck him, and both the pedestrian and the car came to rest in the northbound travel lane. Obryan was transported to a Spokane hospital, Sacred Heart Medical Center, where he received treatment. The State Patrol has not disclosed the extent of his injuries or his current condition.

The driver, Denise S. Schulz, 59, of Riverside, was not hurt, troopers said. Troopers said she was wearing her seatbelt. The Nissan had reportable damage and was towed from the scene.

Where the State Patrol Investigation Stands

The Washington State Patrol is investigating the crash, and the cause remains under review. Investigators said drugs and alcohol were not factors in the collision. The State Patrol has not announced any citations or charges so far.

Which agency investigates often depends on where the crash happened. Highway crashes are often handled by state police or highway patrol, and crashes on city streets by local officers.

Affected by an accident like this?

Here is what people in Washington usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.

  2. Your belongings. A damaged bike, phone, or clothes can be part of what insurance pays for.

  3. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  4. Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
