What Happened on Eastbound I-96 in Boston Township
Troopers from the Lakeview Post responded around 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Michigan State Police said a preliminary investigation indicates a semi-truck failed to stop for traffic that had come to a standstill and struck the back of a Chrysler Pacifica, which was pushed into a Dodge Ram truck. Police said the Pacifica driver, a 77-year-old Greenville man, died at the scene.
Police said the front-seat passenger, a 63-year-old Greenville woman, suffered critical injuries, and two other Pacifica passengers had serious injuries not considered life-threatening. All three were hospitalized. The Dodge Ram driver was not hurt, but police said a 33-year-old Zeeland woman riding as a passenger had serious injuries and was taken to a hospital. Police said the semi-truck's driver, 33, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was not hurt.
Where the Michigan State Police Investigation Stands
Police said everyone involved was wearing a seat belt and that speed appears to be a factor. Police said it does not seem that drugs or alcohol were involved. Michigan State Police shared the preliminary findings in a post on Sunday, and troopers said the investigation is ongoing.
Police usually wait to release the names of the people involved until their families have been told. That is why names often come out a day or more later.

Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.
Your vehicle. Tow yards usually charge for every day a towed vehicle sits there.
Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.
Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.
