One Killed in Modesto Truck Accident on Highway 99
The driver of a GMC was pronounced dead at the scene after a collision with a silver Chevrolet pickup truck on Highway 99 just north of Carpenter Road.
One person was killed in a truck crash on Highway 99 just north of Carpenter Road in the Modesto area on October 4, according to the California Highway Patrol.
How the Highway 99 Collision Unfolded
Shortly after 6:00 p.m., a 22-year-old man was driving a silver Chevrolet pickup truck northbound in the middle lane when the truck moved into an adjacent lane and struck the back of a GMC, CHP said. The collision caused the GMC to lose control and overturn onto the shoulder of Sisk Road. The GMC driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was partially ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver and a passenger in the truck were uninjured.
What Makes Impaired-Driving Truck Crashes Dangerous
The crash happened on a busy stretch of Highway 99 as vehicles traveled in adjacent lanes at highway speeds. A lane change at such speeds can leave another driver no time to react, and when a truck strikes a smaller vehicle from behind, the occupants of that vehicle face the greatest danger. Impaired driving compounds the risk on any road.
According to California DOT, California saw 1,355 alcohol-impaired traffic fatalities in 2023.
Asked by Accident News in a past interview why impaired-driving truck crashes turn serious, Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, who has represented families after fatal truck crashes involving impaired drivers, said, "An impaired-driving crash tends to follow a recognizable pattern: excessive speed, delayed braking, and reactions that arrive too late to matter. Slowed reflexes, poor judgment, and reduced vision are the predictable effects that turn a routine moment into a collision."
Where the CHP Investigation Stands
Arriving CHP officers investigated and arrested the truck driver on suspicion of DUI. He was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on a vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated charge and on an allegation of driving with a suspended license, CHP said. The investigation is ongoing.
Bond added, "Impairment is a legal threshold, so investigators rely on toxicology and blood-alcohol results, field-sobriety records, and the vehicles' speeds at impact to establish whether a person involved crossed it."
