Southfield, MichiganPublished 2 min read

A pedestrian was killed in a crash on southbound M-10 near 9 Mile Road in Southfield on October 3, according to Michigan State Police.

What Happened on Southbound M-10

Troopers were called to the scene shortly after 11:30 p.m. A two-vehicle crash had left one vehicle disabled and blocking the two left lanes of the freeway. A passing motorist stopped on the right shoulder, exited their vehicle and crossed the freeway to assist those involved in the initial crash. As the motorist was providing assistance, another vehicle approaching the disabled car swerved to avoid it and struck the pedestrian. Troopers, Southfield police and Southfield Fire/EMS began lifesaving efforts, including CPR, but the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The freeway was closed during the investigation and reopened at approximately 4:30 a.m.

What Makes Pedestrian Crashes on Freeways So Dangerous

A pedestrian was on foot in a live freeway lane when they were struck. People on foot face the gravest danger on high-speed roads, where drivers have little time to react and a pedestrian has no protection. Disabled vehicles, low lighting and fast-moving traffic can make a freeway scene especially hazardous for anyone outside a vehicle. Police said there is no indication that alcohol or drugs were a factor.

According to NHTSA, the U.S. saw 7,080 people killed in traffic crashes involving pedestrians in 2024. In a past interview with Accident News, Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, who has represented families after fatal pedestrian crashes, said, "A person on foot has no protection against a moving vehicle, so speed decides survival. A car at 40 mph needs far more room to stop than one at 20, and busy intersections concentrate the risk where turning vehicles and blocked sightlines cut into a driver's reaction time."

Where the Michigan State Police Investigation Stands

The driver who struck the pedestrian remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, police said. The crash remains under investigation, and no charges have been announced.

Bond added, "The condition of a crosswalk, the presence of warning signs, and the angle of nearby lights all factor into what investigators examine when a pedestrian is struck by a vehicle."
