A 24-year-old passenger was seriously injured in a single-car accident on Highway 214 near milepost 22 in Marion County, Oregon, early Wednesday, according to the State Police.
The southbound Subaru left the road just before 2 a.m., struck a tree, and plunged down an embankment before catching fire. Investigators believe speed played a role in the wreck.
Paramedics rushed the passenger to a local hospital for treatment of severe injuries. The 18-year-old driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation. No further details were immediately released.
