The Night of the North Valley Mills Drive Crash

Officers were called to the 700 block of North Valley Mills Drive at about 9:40 p.m. Police said a Dodge Ram pickup truck was traveling southbound when it struck the man in the roadway. The pedestrian was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Police have not released his name.

Where the Waco Police Investigation Stands

The Waco Police Department said the investigation is ongoing and that no arrest had been made as of October 28. Police said the pickup's driver has cooperated with investigators. Detectives are still trying to find and notify the man's next of kin, and police said his name will be released at a later date.

Vehicles from a serious crash are often towed to a secure lot and held for inspection. That is a standard step, and the vehicles can be held for weeks.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Texas usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
