How the Ponquogue Avenue Crash Unfolded

The pedestrian was crossing Ponquogue Avenue, heading west, when a car turning left from Montauk Highway onto Ponquogue Avenue hit them, police said. Members of the Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance cared for the pedestrian at the scene. The pedestrian was then handed off to a Suffolk County Police Department helicopter, police said.

Help for people affected by a crash is below.

Where the Southampton Police Investigation Stands

The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Police said no criminality is suspected at this time, and the investigation is ongoing. Ponquogue Avenue was closed for a period between Montauk Highway and Good Ground Road while officers worked at the scene.

Investigators write down the weather, lighting and road surface after every serious crash. Recording those details is routine and does not point to any single cause.

Affected by an accident like this?

Here is what people in New York usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.

  2. Your belongings. A damaged bike, phone, or clothes can be part of what insurance pays for.

  3. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  4. Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
