What Happened on Westbound I-80 Near Cordelia

The California Highway Patrol said the first reports came in at about 12:49 a.m. Sunday, describing an obstruction blocking the No. 3 and No. 4 lanes just east of the Cordelia Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Facility scales. Officers arrived at about 12:55 a.m. and found an unidentified woman in the roadway with obvious signs of death. The CHP said a 59-year-old man from Oakley was driving a 2015 Peterbilt truck and semi-trailer that had merged onto I-80 from state Route 12. The pedestrian was in the No. 6 lane when the truck struck her, the CHP said. The driver pulled into the westbound scales believing he had hit a large box, and the truck had radiator damage, the CHP said.

Where the CHP Investigation Stands

The CHP said officers recovered physical evidence linking the truck to the crash. Drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be a factor for the truck driver, the CHP said. The woman has not been formally identified, and the investigation is ongoing. All westbound lanes were stopped for a time, and the No. 1 lane reopened at 3:38 a.m. Anyone with information was encouraged to contact the CHP Solano Area office.

A full investigation into a serious crash often takes weeks, and sometimes months. Investigators usually wait for vehicle data and lab results before they finish their report.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in California usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
