Peggy Holt killed in Modesto hit-and-run accident, CHP says

Eduardo Diaz, 19, arrested on felony charges after fleeing the scene of the deadly collision
Peggy Holt, 79, of Modesto, was killed in a hit-and-run pedestrian accident near Claribel and Langworth roads in Stanislaus County, California, on Tuesday, April 7, according to the Highway Patrol.
Eduardo Diaz, 19, of Riverbank, was arrested and booked into the Stanislaus County jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run resulting in death. Investigators located the white Ford F-150 believed to be involved in the collision and seized it as evidence.
The pickup truck reportedly sustained damage to its right front side, including the headlight assembly, front bumper and fender. The driver fled the scene immediately after striking the woman around 9 p.m.
The CHP’s Investigative Services Unit and the Riverbank Police Department assisted in locating the suspect vehicle.
The crash remains under investigation, and authorities have not released additional details.
How do investigators track down fleeing vehicles?
The arrest of a suspect in a fatal collision often relies on physical evidence left at the scene and inter-agency cooperation. National LNational Legal Analyst Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, noted that "What's truly haunting about hit-and-runs is the feeling of being abandoned in a moment of crisis. Most of these drivers are caught within forty-eight hours if there's any physical evidence left behind."
According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, one out of every ten deadly crashes in California is a hit-and-run, and 62% of victims who die in these collisions are pedestrians. In Los Angeles County alone, hit-and-run collisions account for more than 50% of all injury street accidents.
What happens after a hit-and-run suspect is identified?
While criminal charges address the violation of state law, families of victims often face a separate process to address the sudden loss of a loved one. National LNational Legal Analyst Stefano Formica, Of Bond Legal, noted that "Losing a family member to a hit-and-run leaves so many questions that may never be answered. Automatic license plate readers scan thousands of cars every hour, helping investigators reconstruct the path a fleeing driver took."
Individuals involved in hit-and-run incidents may have legal options. Consulting a personal injury attorney can help clarify rights and potential claims.
California wrongful death statute
Under Cal. Code Civ. Proc. § 377.60, surviving family members may file a wrongful death action. California applies pure comparative fault. The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death.
Recoverable damages may include loss of financial support, loss of companionship, funeral expenses, and the decedent's pre-death pain and suffering.
