Off-duty LAFD firefighter loses life in early morning collision with big rig
Stan Reza, 35, was killed in a two-vehicle crash on the northbound San Gabriel River Freeway near Beverly Boulevard in Whittier early Friday, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The pickup collided with a big rig at approximately 2:20 a.m. Investigators have not yet determined what caused the two vehicles to strike one another. Reza, an off-duty Los Angeles Fire Department crew member, died at the scene from blunt traumatic injuries, the Medical Examiner's office reported.
"Our thoughts are with the firefighter's family and with every member of this department who is grieving alongside them," LAFD Chief Jaime Moore said in a statement.
Service and memorial arrangements are pending.
Troopers continue to investigate the collision.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 392 people died in large truck crashes across the state in 2023.
