A person was seriously injured in a truck accident on Interstate 5 near the Grapevine in Lebec on Thursday, according to the California Highway Patrol.‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‌

The collision involved a white sports car and a semi-trailer traveling in the northbound lanes at approximately 6:10 p.m. Traffic cameras showed significant delays building in the area as emergency crews responded to the wreckage.

Paramedics transported at least one passengers to a local hospital with major injuries. Their current condition has not been released.

Investigators have not determined what caused the two vehicles to collide. No road closures were immediately ordered.

What caused the collision on Interstate 5?

While authorities work to determine why the sports car and the semi-trailer collided near the Grapevine, commercial vehicle crashes often require extensive forensic analysis. Investigators typically examine electronic logging devices, dashcam footage, and skid marks to piece together the sequence of events.

Candice Bond, managing partner at Bond Legal, said, "Driver fatigue remains one of the most underreported dangers in commercial trucking, and hours-of-service violations don't always surface immediately. Electronic logging records can reveal a great deal once reviewed."

"A legal team working for injured survivors can secure those records early and coordinate with reconstruction specialists to trace how a serious crash developed," added Bond, who is also a national legal analyst for Accident News.

According to the National Safety Council, 114,552 large trucks were involved in crashes resulting in injury nationwide in 2023.

What are the risks of commercial vehicle crashes?

The size and weight of a fully loaded semi-trailer create significant hazards for passengers of smaller passenger vehicles like the sports car involved in this collision. Insurance adjusters often contact injured parties within days of a crash, before the full extent of medical costs and long-term impacts are known.

Individuals involved in commercial vehicle incidents may have legal options. Consulting a personal injury attorney can help clarify rights and potential claims.

California personal injury framework

California follows a pure comparative fault system. Injured parties may recover damages reduced by their percentage of fault. The statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of the crash.

Damages include economic losses (medical bills, lost income, rehabilitation) and non-economic losses (pain, suffering, emotional distress).

"Nothing about a collision between a semi-truck and a passenger vehicle is equal, and the weight difference alone, often forty to one, produces forces no smaller car can absorb," explained Stefano Formica, a national legal analyst for Accident News and of counsel at Bond Legal.

"Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help injured survivors preserve critical records, review driver logs, and pursue the full investigation that serious commercial truck crashes demand."
