Brittany Jacks, 31, of Atlanta, was arrested. She faces charges of driving under the influence, serious injury by vehicle and failure to yield after her southbound 2020 Chevrolet Trax turned left into the path of an oncoming 2001 Mercedes E320.

Young, a passenger in the Mercedes, and Tommy Heaton, a passenger in the Chevrolet, suffered serious injuries and were taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital.

The Mercedes driver, 18-year-old Bryce Smith of Marietta, declined treatment for minor injuries. Another passenger in the car, Kymani Russell, was transported for treatment of minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation. Police are asking anyone with information to contact the department.

While the criminal justice system prosecutes the at-fault party, civil avenues exist to address the physical and financial toll on the victims.

How does a DUI charge impact the investigation?

According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, alcohol is a factor in nearly a quarter of all fatal traffic collisions statewide. The ongoing police inquiry will document the exact sequence of events, road conditions at the intersection, and toxicology results.
